An anonymous once said “You cannot connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect the dots looking backwards” See, each and everyone of us has made an error or the other in the course of the last decade but let me remind you that an error does not become a mistake until you refuse to correct it. While it may seem to you that you are the only imperfect being, asking your neighbor to relay his or her story will reveal to you that everyone has a story to tell.
As Albert Einstein once said “Everybody is a genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live it’s whole life believing it is stupid. Each of us has a different need, different dream, different strength, different gift and let me say different brain. Maybe you don’t know, there are over 7 billion people on this planet and no one shares exactly the same features with you. These features separates you from those that had lived, those that are living and those that would live. All this comes back to your judging yourself by the mistakes you have made in the past or simply say by your weaknesses. You may not take my words for it but consider the words John F. Kennedy who said “change is a law of life, those who look to the past and present are certain to miss the future”. In other words, if continue to get yourself drawn into the loop of errors you have committed in the past, you might end up not realizing what the future holds for you.
Well, it is quite disheartening considering the definition many people attach to their failure. While you may feel you have failed in the last decade, I have this to ask you. Were those goals/targets below your capabilities? If yes, then you need to reconsider what you define as failure. Failure is not when you perform below average, it is when you actually perform below your capabilities. The word “Average” is used to describe a general performance not your specific ability. And it hurts me when I discovered this because my teachers have always determined my failure using the so called “average”. Everyone has an innate ability. It is not just in you, it is in all of us. So it is when you fail to develop this ability that you start to plan your failure. Okay, have you ever wondered why so many people have sights but few people actually have a vision? Interestingly, the story continues when you realize that out of the sheer number of people with a vision, just few have a mission to execute the vision. The same thing boils down to why we claim we have a new year resolution but after two weeks or so, we quit. I don’t know what dream you have but there is someone in the hospital praying to God to have the opportunity you have.
Death is not what scares most people. What most people are scared of is getting to the end of life and realizing that they truly never lived. A survey was conducted on some hospital patients very close to death and they were asked to reflect on their biggest regret. So many of them didn’t regret the things they did rather, they regretted the things they didn’t do. Pretty sure we know the story of a man that was warned not to fly too high in the sky or the sun would melt his feathers. But because of his arrogance, he refused and he flew very high, fell to the ground and died. But that’s not all, he was also warned not to fly too low to the ground. Its good not to be too arrogant but does that mean we should be too crude, too shy, too humble or too timid? One surprising thing about life is not that too many people aim too high and miss, it is that too many people aim too low and hit.
And I have to say this again. I don’t know what your dream is but if you refuse to move out of your comfort zone, you will continue to cluck with the chickens when you are destined to soar with the eagles. Do you want to remain with the chickens or you want to soar like the eagles?
Well let me tell you, eagles are not short-sighted, they have a well developed organ for sighting objects from a far distance and that’s why I am not asking you for your
New Year Resolution rather, what is your New Decade Resolution? If it must be, it is up to you.
